It has taken me approximately two days to come down from my high of New York Fashion Week. I still can’t believe that I actually went! Not only did I go to just enjoy the atmosphere, but I also attended TWO amazing shows; Herve Leger and Dennis Basso. I know you’re probably thinking “C’mon Mia relax, it was just a fashion show…what’s the big idea?” Well, for me it’s much deeper. I remember watching the Style Network wayyyyy back in the day when they actually use to show all things fashion related and not just reality shows lol. During Fashion Week they would play countless hours of the shows that were featured during the week. I would sit on my bedroom floor Indian-style for hours watching the models and studying the theme (what I now know as the trend) of each show. I was basically sitting there daydreaming about actually sitting in the audience one day, pretty much thinking that it would never happen. How would this ghetto girl ever make it to a real-life designer show during Fashion Week? I had no clue. Fast forward about 18 years later and I have arrived!
I wanted to fit right in with the other attendees, and we all know that Fashion Week is all about being bold while being true to your style. It’s no better time to just push your style to the limit and show everyone under the tent whatcha got! I remained true to the essence of my simple style and went street chic to the Herve Leger show. I rocked an olive bomber jacket, nude suede dress, pink fluffy sandals (sold out at MissGuided) and a red trucker hat that read “Fashion Never Dies” (sold out at Flei Yung), which caught the attention of many!
The ambiance of the show was just as I’d imagined. Cameras flashing, celebs scattered about and people chattering non-stop. Then, the lights go black. A roar of blazing loud music comes pouring through the speakers and a sea of fashion appears. Beading, bomber jackets and splashes of color filled the runway.The Herve Leger show was filled with it’s signature body-hugging style, but turned up to the max! Then, this happened…
Yes, I met my Auntie June. Just in case you’re late to the show, here’s a few times where I’ve expressed my love for this amazing woman here and here just to name a few. This was definitely a dream come true. I’ve said it a million times, speaking to and now meeting my role model is like an aspiring basketball player meeting Michael Jordan. It was totally an unforgettable moment.
Although our meeting only lasted every bit of 5 minutes, we hugged, complimented each other’s looks and she informed me that “any friend of Krissy’s is a friend of mine”. With that being said, I have to say a huge thank you to my beautiful and dear friend Krissy that invited me to the show and extended her hand to introduce me to my Auntie. xo
Excuse me for being such a wimp right now, but I am literally crying writing this. I cried when I got back to my hotel as well. I took a moment to say a prayer and to thank God for that very moment. Not just because I met her, but because I remember sitting at my desk job and reading her book as a source of inspiration. Daydreaming about attending fashion shows, about making an impact on someone’s life through fashion and style just like her. Never thinking that I would ever actually get a chance to do so. I cry at the thought of my journey. And here I am 7 years later. Crazy, right?
I damn near cried tears of joy when I saw the pics on IG! Your journey is SO inspiring Mia!!
I use to watch the shows as well. As I became an adult, I would search for them on E! sometime. They weren’t sharing this world with us anymore. :(. I was so proud and happy for you. The looks you created were amazing. Do you wish you could dress like this all the time. I enjoyed all the IG sharing!

I’m not a fashion expert but have always admire fashion as a creative art. Like you, I too used to watch the Style Network fashion shows & the behind the scenes footage of the makings of NYFW and often felt how amazing it would be to be in the presence. Though I have not made one yet, reading your post let me know anything possible. By the way, love the look; simple but chic.
